What is a VIN Verification?
A VIN verification is a physical inspection of the vehicle. It’s to verify that the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on your vehicle matches the documents used to register the vehicle and that the vehicle is yours. This protects you if the vehicle is ever stolen and they attempt to register the vehicle under a different owner. The inspection also makes sure your vehicle follows the safety and environmental standards in the state of California.
To be accepted by the DMV, this inspection can only be completed with form REG 31 by an authorized DMV representative, California licensed vehicle verifier, authorized auto club employee, or peace officer who has been properly trained to perform vehicle verifications.
*Although you can view and print the REG 31 form, you are not allowed to fill it out on your own.
Why do I need a VIN Verification?
In California, the DMV will require a VIN verification for different reasons, but the main ones are:
- Transferring and Registering vehicles from out of state
- Vehicles with no California record
- Vehicles that are no longer in the California DMV database
What documents do I need for the inspection?
You will need to have at least one document that proves your ownership rights over the vehicle, such as the registration or title. You will also need a state-issued ID to prove your identity.
